Choose the tent by weight first
In Western Australia the distances are long and the tent lives on the roof the whole way, so weight is the number that decides everything else. Check the dynamic roof load for your exact vehicle and the rating of the rack, tub rack or canopy you are mounting to, then use the lowest of those figures. The total has to include the tent, the mounting hardware, the rack itself and anything else carried on top.

The 1.4 is the lightest and the one most factory roof racks will carry. The 1.9 Penthouse has the largest floor in the range and needs a rack and vehicle rated to suit it.
What Western Australian touring asks of a tent
The trips people buy these for are not gentle ones.
- Corrugations. The Gibb River Road and the tracks into Karijini will find anything loose. The shell, the hinges and the mounting hardware take that load continuously, not occasionally.
- Heat. Ningaloo, Exmouth and the Pilbara through the middle of the year sit well above what the southern states see. Ventilation and a shaded awning matter more than insulation.
