What's in it
  • 270 degree awning, 9 square metres of cover
  • Free standing on three legs
  • LED lighting built into the arms
  • Standard mounting bracket that bolts to a roof rack

31kg boxed.

How do I install it?

The standard bracket in the box bolts it to a roof rack. To mount it on the tent itself you need the quick release bracket pair, which is sold separately.

Once it is out it stands on its own three legs.

The lights run on a USB plug, straight off the tent's USB point.

What it mounts to

The awning comes with a standard bracket that bolts to a roof rack, so it works with or without a tent. Our heavy duty quick release brackets are the second way. They fit either onto that standard bracket, or straight into the channels running down both sides of the 1.4, the 1.4X and the 1.4Z. That is how the awning goes onto the tent itself, and it is what lets you lift it off rather than drive around with it. The channel nuts come in the box. They are not fitted at the factory, so they go in when you mount it. Nothing to fabricate and nothing to drill. The 1.5 Pro and the 1.9 Penthouse take a different awning, which we are sourcing separately. Because both sides of the tent carry a channel, you can run the 270 degree awning down one side for living space and a shower awning down the other.

It also mounts to roof racks and tub racks using the standard bracket supplied. Adding the quick release brackets on top of it means the awning lifts off without tools.

Common questions

What does a 270 degree awning actually cover?
It covers one full side of the vehicle and wraps around the rear, roughly three quarters of the way around. A standard rectangular awning covers one side only. The wrap is what gives you a sheltered working area behind the vehicle rather than a strip of shade along it.

Will it fit my vehicle?
It fits any vehicle carrying the 1.4, the 1.4X and the 1.4Z, mounted into the tent's side channels on our quick release brackets. It also bolts to a roof rack on the standard bracket supplied, with or without a tent. The 1.5 Pro and the 1.9 Penthouse take a different awning, which we are sourcing separately. If you are unsure about your particular rack, send us the make and model and we will tell you before you buy.

Do the lights need their own battery?
Not if you have one of our tents. The tent is pre-wired with an Anderson plug and the awning draws from it. Mounted to a bare rack, you will need to supply 12V yourself.

Can I run a shower awning at the same time?
Yes. The 1.4, the 1.4x and the 1.4z carry a channel down both sides, so the 270 degree awning goes on one side and a shower awning on the other.

How much does it weigh, and does it count towards my roof load?
The awning itself is around 26kg, and it ships at 31kg boxed with its mounting brackets. Yes, it counts towards your roof load. Allow the full 31kg in your sum and you will be erring on the safe side, since the awning and its brackets both end up on the vehicle. The awning, the tent and the rack all add together against the roof load limit that applies while you are driving. Our guide to roof load limits shows you how to work it out.

Is it suitable for Australian conditions?
It is built for harsh sun, wind and sudden weather, and packs to a low profile. As with any awning, bring it in when the wind gets up rather than riding it out, since an awning under load puts strain on both the arms and whatever it is mounted to.

Full description

9m² of shade, 26kg, and it stands on its own three legs. You do not need the vehicle to hold it up.

The On The Horizon 270 Degree Awning wraps shade around the side and rear of your vehicle from a single mounting rail, with LED lighting built into the arms. It bolts to a roof rack on the bracket supplied, or into the side of the 1.4, the 1.4X and the 1.4Z on our quick release brackets, and runs off the tent's pre-wired Anderson plug, so the camp lighting works without a separate battery, a light bar or cables run through a door.

Lighting that runs off the tent

LED strip lighting is built into the support arms rather than clipped on afterwards, so the light falls evenly across the whole covered area instead of coming from one bright point. There is nothing to hang, nothing to aim and nothing to pack separately.

Every On The Horizon hard shell tent ships with 12V and USB points and a pre-wired Anderson plug. The awning plugs into that. If you are mounting the awning to a rack instead of a tent, you will need a 12V supply of your own.

Coverage and build

A 270 degree awning covers the side of the vehicle and wraps around the rear, which is the difference between shading a doorway and shading the whole working area of your camp. That matters most when the weather turns, since the covered area is where you cook, change and keep gear dry.

The arms are heavy duty aluminium and the canopy is weather resistant ripstop canvas. Ripstop matters on an awning more than most places, because a small tear in a panel under tension spreads quickly.

Pairs with

The awning is designed to work as part of a set rather than on its own. It fits the 1.4, the 1.4X and the 1.4Z in the hard shell rooftop tent range, and the touring bundles pair a tent, this awning and camp furniture at a saving over buying each separately.
